It's ok, you are not alone. I fall off the wagon regularly. The trick is to get back on again, and get back into it.
Better to cycle 3 days a week and fail the other 4 than to not cycle at all!

Hello.

Just thought I'd check in to this site with my morning coffee...

Like you, I also fell off the wagon over Christmas. I gained 3kg!!! I am sure that I can just look at a pavlova and put on a kilo. Anyway, back on track now and like you said, no one is going to do it for me. Just get back into it, one day at a time. (Would you like any more cliches?)

I've set myself a goal - I have entered into a 15km off road run which is on 21 April. If you can find an event that you think you'd like to enter (there are lots of mountain biking / road cycling events too) then it is something to work towards. I know that I'm not going to have an easy time running if I am carring extra weight. So at the moment that is my focus.

I think that you cannot let something like your bike breaking stop you from exercising. (Which you haven't - you have yoga). But it will also help you get past the plateau if you change up what you're doing. Don't let anything stop you!

Eg, last year in April I was the heaviest I had ever been - went to the doctor, jumped on the scales and when I went home I made my fiance eat all the junk in the house and told him we're not getting any more. My routine was up at 5.30am, go for a run, scooter to work, come home and make dinner, and then lunch for the next day. Some nights I had soccer training too. One Saturday morning I got up and some a$$hole had stolen my scooter. Which meant I had to take the train to work, which meant I had no time to run in the morning. And never had the energy to do it after work. So rather than giving up, I got my mountain bike out of the shed and decided I would cycle to work. It was an hour each way each day, but there was no way I was giving up. So for a month I was cycling, instead of running and it sure helped.

So you mustn't let anything get in your way - like a broken bike. Why not try swimming or running instead / as well as yoga? Most people hate running - it is hard work, but if you start with a small distance then try and do a little more each day and before you know it you're doing a 15km off road run

I don't know much about the protein shakes and those sorts of things. I do know though that you'll find that all that gimmiky stuff always says on the label "when used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise plan". Like that Ab Circle Pro advertisement - since they were sued or whatever they've had disclaimers across the tv screen. I have managed so far without that stuff, plenty of people do. And to be honest I don't have the money to spend on it either.

You sound like you have the right outlook anyway. Keep doing what you're doing - you'll get there

Everything kinda hit the fan over the last couple of months, I haven't gained any weight but I defiantly haven't lost it either. I had a minor set back with my bike, it seemed that everytime I went for a ride something would go wrong (chain came off, pedal broke etc) and so it went back to the shop to be fixed. I am still doing yoga and man it gives me so much energy. So obviously christmas time hit and I lost all focus, chocolate found its way back into my eating habits and everything went down hill.

I have come to realise though that if I am actually going to loose weight then I need to do it for myself and no body else, I've been told my whole life that I'm fat or over weight and always just agreed and always said I am going to loose the weight but it never worked because I never truly believed it. But now I believe that I'm happy being me, I'm happy the way I am, but do know that I need to eat healthier and exercise to keep the insides of me happy as well.

Eating 6 appropriately portioned meals during the day and set times, drinking plenty of water, cycling or doing yoga and living life how I want to will be how I become happy inside and out.

I am on holiday for another three weeks and this will be my chance to get everything into a routine so that when I get back to work it will be apart of my life and not like another chore I need to achieve or try and fit in somewhere.

Bye for now

Hi, My name is Rei and my entire life I've been 'big'. At 16 I weighed in at 120kgs and stayed there even through 4 kids. Now I'm 42 and at 145kgs (just weighed today at the docs. My BP was 191/110, the poor nurse looked as though she was going to have a heart attack at seeing that number.

I have a long journey ahead of me but its one that I need to take if I plan to stick it out and see my granddaughter grow up and be happy.

I haven't succeeded yet.. I say 'yet' with some hope and well just a tiny bit of belief that I will succeed. I've tried a few times before and slacked off, and here I am giving it another go.

My only plan is to eat less than I exert, loose a bit of weight through food/diet management, include more exercise the better I feel and keep going from there.

The only point of difference I have now is that I've given myself a year to do it in. Not even thought about a weight goal. Just a year to make changes in my lifestyle that will reflect in my body changes/health and well being.

I can only try and try again.. and one day I hope to succeed. I'm kinda scared but kinda excited as well.

Cheers.

I have joined up to Fitday.com and it's been helping heaps. I'm still getting my head around counting calouries but I'm getting there. I've stopped buying crap everyday after school (kinda, I slip up every now and then) but have taken to chewing sugar free gum, to keep my mind busy, so that I don't have to stop I started yoga tonight and man does it make you sweat, it was hard work but I loved it Has anyone else tried yoga, what did you think of it??
I've been thinking of trying meal replacement shakes or doing something like Kate Morgan or Celebrity Slim. Has anyone tried shakes, do they work??
So I think I'm slowly getting there, but I definitly see a brighter, happier, healthier future

Hi,

I just thought I'd share a couple of things that really helped me - because you sound a little like me - I fell off the wagon a bit, but I've started again with running each morning and watching what I'm eating.

First of all - I hate the scales. I think the best way to measure your progress is with the tape measure (I use one out of a sewing kit). Measure your bits - eg your arms, belly, bum, thighs, wherever you like really and write it down. A week later measure yourself again. After just one week I had lost a couple of cm from my belly and my arms. It was really inspiring to see the progress after just one week.

Secondly - exercise. I find that if I don't go for a run in the morning before work, it just doesn't happen. I get my gear ready the night before, and I get up at half past 5 and go. I absolutely fail if I plan on goign after work. The only way it does work is if i have agreed to meet someone and run with them. So maybe get yourself a running buddy (or walking, or cycling, or gym or whatever you do). And my dog helps. If I get up early she follows me around the house waiting for me to take her out for a run...

Next - junk food. I love sugar. I love baking. I love cake decorating. I love lollies. I love it all. I can turn down a pie or a burger or a sausage roll without any trouble. Buying a snack on the way home from work - I can relate to this. To combat this - If I go for a wander during the lunch hour at work, I don't take my wallet. I only take to work for my lunch what I'm going to eat. If I take any baking to work I demolish it all. So, for you, can you go a different way home from work? Not past the shop? Something that helps me when I feel like a sweet treat are the Nescafe Mocha Trim sachets. They hit the spot. Or after dinner - you can get some yummy teas - like cocoa chai, or caramel teas and it is just right for me. Maybe you can try the same thing?

Do you use fitday.com? I found it a little bit fiddly to start with, but once you add in your usual customised food that you eat it is really good. A timtam has the same calories as about 30 grapes. I wouldn't have had a clue if I hadn't started using fitday. It really helps I think to know what you're putting in your body. And how long it takes to burn it back off!! I love biscuits, but I have found them to be the biggest waste of calories of them all. I tell myself that I do actually know what they taste like so I'm not missing anything.

Failing that - get naked and jump up and down in front of the mirror. That always helps me get back on track!!

I hope this helps you

So I'm into my second week, and i have to say the first week went really well. I made it up a huge hill on my bike without stopping for the first time, ate healthy and didn't stop and by crap on the way home from work, I was feeling soooo great. BUT this week, I don't know whats happened, It's like my subconsciously I'm trying to get fatter. I don't understand it. Normally I'm an emotional eater, but this week I have been fine, work has been fantastic, home is great, everything's fine, but I still find that every day this week I have stopped on the way home and brought crap food, and I haven't exercised once this week. WHAT'S GOING ON!!!!

Well it has been over a year since I posted...and it has been a very crappy one much of the time - unexpected surgery,a DVT, major work stress, family issues - you name it I've had to deal with it!!! So I lost sight of my good work and motivation and am currently 76kg. Not huge but still waiting for breast reduction surgery - which I have had to postpone 3x already due to work issues and now found out that I will have to postpone again until next year!!! WTF!!! I am trying to get back on track and be positive in that at least I have more time to lose some weight! I have come back here to read all the great posts and get some inspiration from all those who are doing so well - and hear that I'm not the only one with obstacles to overcome!

All the best, I am sure you can do this! I went from 102kgs to 73kgs for my wedding in a period of 7 months. I am now 78 and aiming for 70 (post babies) I am exercising plenty- running, going to gym classes, doing weight training, walking. I would suggest trying to do some weight training as muscle burns more energy at rest so you can burn energy even when not exercising, plus it may really help you with the pain you are experiencing. I find it helps to have someone exercise with you or keep you accountable, keeps you motivated. Set small goals- 50kgs is a lot of weight, start with 5kgs then treat yourself with something like a massage or a new outfit or something. All the best and keep this up to date so I can follow your progress

So week one over I lost 1.8kgs my hubby lost 1.5kgs. I have been much more active than previously doing some form of activity every day of the week. I am also looking at this as a lifestyle change rather than a diet, so I am having the odd chocolate bar, or other such food but taking it into account in my daily calorie count so that I still eat less than I burn off and the days where I know that I am going to be out or at a party or more likely to eat "treat' type foods I am more active and take into account the extra calories by eating less calories at my other meals. It seems to be working and I feel great- way more energy Although I have to say my hips and knees are killing me!

Well yesterday went well.. went onto the fit website and added in my food, was a wee bit over what i should have eaten but all good as it is really interesting to see how it works. Shame it isnt a NZ site as I found it a wee bit hard finding the foods but just had to do the closest I could.. Have friends over for dinner tonight so will be sorting my food and calories first before they get here so I know what I can and cant have... pre planning should help me with today.

Planning a wedding for October 2012.. Would love to be 50 kg lighter, I know it is a big ask but I reckon if I can motivate myself I should be fine. Im 39, 115.3 kgs..long way to go.
Im a chef as well which doesnt help.. love my food.. hate exercise..lol, well thats not true, I l;ove exercise and the buzz it gives you but my body hates it, i am sore for days and sometimes cant walk afterwards, have buggered ankles and legs.. Tried swimming, not the best but might be all i can do for awhile. Any other ideas out there.
I have a loving hubby to be, who supports me in all this.. its just motivation, believe me I can get motivated, it is staying up there that i have probs with. Ive done all the diets, Jenny Craig, weight watchers, citrus diet, Aitkins etc etc.. even sure slim which was great but I did it at the wrong time of my life.. starting a business at the same time.

Anyway... time for a new me.
Today.. weigth myself at 115.3kg, I yo yo anything from1 - 3 kg in a week, must really start just weighing in once a week.. Saturday mornings I think is best, then I can come down here and fill this in. I always eat breakfast at work.. trying to have an egg adn toast each day. Lunch.. this can be anything, but as it is in a kitchen soemtimes easiest and lowest calories is soup.. Dinner is at home and we eat alot of thai foods... dont think food is my main prob, its the amount of food and the lack of exercise. Might go for a swim tomorrow morning.. See ya tomorrow.

Im so pleased with how its all going, today I went to the gym (second day in a row since joining up) and I did a hard class as well as 20 mins cardio. I also went for a walk with my hubby and dog. The eating is going well too, yesterday I did have a bar of chocolate and a glass of bubbles but I had allowed for it because I knew I was going to this event so I just made sure that the rest of the day I didn't eat so many calories. I feel so inspired and excited about this new journey, its no where near as hard as I thought it would be!
I am really looking forward to friday to finding out how much weight my hubby and i have lost!! Who would ever think this could be fun!! Thanks so much for the advice an inspiration, this website has been real helpful

Well today is my second day I have been on my journey to weighing less. I am a breastfeeding mum of four and have lost a lot of weight in the past but after my last baby I see it starting to creep back on. At my heaviest I was a size 22 and 120kgs, currently I am close to 80kgs and my goal is 70kgs. So 10kgs to go. My hubby and I have decided to do it together, and its going to be a bit of a competition to see who can lose the weight first, nothing like a bit of competition. Its also nice to have the support and encouragment and knowing that we both feed each others problem I am hoping by working together we will also be more affective.
Today I went to the local markets and got our fruit and vege fresh, I also went and got some chicken breasts and fish and shrimp.
Yesterday I went for a long run along the beach, today for a good walk along the river. So I am trying to stay active and eat less.
I have a lot of extra baggy skin and finding this website was good for me because I almost used that as an excuse to not loose any more weight, like the more weight I lost the worse I would look with extra baggy skin, and I think in my head I had that the only way I would look any good was with surgery (which we cannot afford) and reading the stuff about being your ideal body weight/body fat composition made me feel much better, there is something I can do in all this!
Anyways I need support and encouragement so thought I would join the online community
We have four kids ranging in age from almost 5 months to 13 years, so I am a very busy mum! Its a lot of fun though

Sounds like normal slow down, ever thought about taking up a sport? It would just those few extra calories as well as raise your metabolism. Team sports are good fun and a way of getting out also.
If you think ahead and do any sort of weight bearing exercise instead or as well as, you can prevent osteoporosis also (its strengthens the bones!)

I have always been a slim person. That is until I hit menopause. I am only 46 but already my body is shifting in unexpected ways. I am a bit distraught by this, even though I have a devoted husband. I don't want to grow old like this. I am a writer so I sit every day for half a day writing, on my butt. I am looking forward to loosing the 8 kilos that have changed my life. Looking forward to being part of a community of self helpers, rather than self harmers.

Hey, the site is working again...

Honeymoon was great. Apart from the weather... was rough as guts on the Friday. On the bright side, we didn't have to drink because we felt woozy enough!

I felt very... "round" afterwards so I didn't weigh myself last week after we got back in an effort to not shatter my spirits.

The wife weighed herself the day after we got home and was very ambiguous about her weight, it appears an upward of 6 lbs gained that week. Free buffet's do that to you.

There WAS a gym on board, which I went to ONCE for about an hour, using all of the cool machines, it was a great workout. The wife had a look but saw all of the "skinny, muscly people" and didn't want to be in there with them.

Anyway, on to this week.

Husband
Current weight: 207.7 lbs, gain of 2.7 lbs.

Most likely a "technical loss" had I weighed in last week. Not too bad overall though, considering how I felt last week.

Wife
Loss of 4 lbs.

The wife weighed herself but didn't tell me the number, all she said was she has lost 4 lbs since we got home from the cruise.

Here's a photo of us on the boat.

I think it probably weighs in on an employers mind that if a person is overweight, chances are high a normal cold will be a chest infection for that person, and more days will be lost in sick days.
Not to mention, i know i had a very overweight co-worker and it was awful seeing him. Not because it was ugly, but because he was such an awesome guy, and you just know that hes heading for a heart attack. I alway felt bad and stink myself.
Yep, did try talking to him, but as you are probably aware, hes got to make that choice
