Hi guys,

Gee it's been a while - but I just wanted to drop by & say a big THANK YOU!!!

Since descovering your site a year ago I have lost more than 30KG. My original goal was to get down to about 80KG (from 103) - once I achieved that weight, I took another look at my goals and decided to try for 75KG. And so on...

I've maintained 67KG for about 3months now happily.

And I've been completely smokefree for 15 months.

Thank you all, I'm very grateful for sharing your inspiration.

Cheers

Found this today in the news http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/wellbeing/3663605/Diabetes-linked-to-lack-of-sleep

Just one sleepless night can hamper the body's ability to use insulin to process sugar in the bloodstream, according to a study which scientists say might help explain why diabetes is on the rise.

Researchers said their findings suggest it may be no coincidence that while sleep duration has shortened in western societies in the past decade there has also been an increase in cases of "insulin resistance" and adult-onset diabetes.

"Our findings show a short night of sleep has more profound effects on metabolic regulation than previously appreciated," said Esther Donga, director of Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, who led the study published on Wednesday.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body's inability to adequately use insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, to control glucose sugar produced from food. Sugar levels rise and can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and major arteries.

The disease, linked to poor diet and lack of exercise, is reaching epidemic levels. An estimated 180 million people now suffer from diabetes around the world.

Previous studies have found that several nights of poor sleep can result in impaired use of insulin, but Donga said this was the first study to examine the effects of only a single bad night's sleep.

The Dutch scientists examined nine healthy people - once after a night of eight hours sleep and once after a night of just four hours.

The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), showed that partial sleep restriction during a single night reduced some types of insulin sensitivity by 19 to 25 percent.

"Our data indicate that insulin sensitivity is not fixed in healthy (people), but depends on the duration of sleep in the preceding night," Donga wrote in the study.

"In fact it is tempting to speculate that the negative effects of multiple nights of shortened sleep on glucose tolerance can be reproduced, at least in part, by just one sleepless night."

A study by US scientists published last year found that people who slept less than six hours a night were 4.5 times more likely to develop abnormal blood sugar readings in six years compared with those who slept longer.

Experts say adults typically need between seven and nine hours sleep a night.

Donga said further studies were needed to see whether ways of improving sleep duration could help stabilise glucose levels in patients with diabetes.

Motivation and keeping a journal of what you eat are key components for shedding excess weight, according to new research.

Scientists at the University of Kentucky and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that the type of motivation for dieting and techniques to boost it when it dips could mean the difference between success and failure.

"Motivation has an impact on weight loss but the impact is really mediated by adherence to self-monitoring," said Kelly H. Webber, an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. "If you are going to self-monitor your diet and exercise every day you are going to lose more weight.

Webber, who along with her colleagues reported the findings in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, said the best way to self-monitor is to keep a journal of everything you eat and how much you exercise.

The researchers studied two types of motivation, autonomous and controlled, during a 16-week weight-loss program involving 66 overweight women. Autonomous motivation is driven by personal reasons, while controlled motivation is based more on pressure from others and feelings of guilt.

They found that dieters who were self motivated and who kept a journal tended to be more successful.

"People who actually write down everything they eat and drink during the weight loss program are going to do better. And that is probably why commercial programs like Weight Watchers are very successful," said Webber.

All of the dieters were given questionnaires and asked to describe their motivation. Their weight loss and motivation were measured every four weeks during the program. They also measured their own progress with a online self-monitoring program.

"The importance of motivation is that it gets you to self motivate, which is the behavior that matters in weight loss," Webber explained.

Sustaining motivation was also essential because once it began to drop, usually between weeks four to eight, successful dieters who dropped 5 percent of their body weight were those who managed to keep the motivation going.

Webber suggested that if motivation starts to fall after about four weeks it would be a good time to boost it with initiatives.

"We think that contact with a counsellor is always helpful with motivation and contact with other people trying to lose weight," she said.

"Seek support. I think we need support to keep continually motivated. Some people are successful on their own but most of us need support."

I might have to try avoiding doing some of these, see if it makes any difference. To be honest I thought it was really poorly written though (seemed very 'those gluttony fat people are fat because' style to me.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/checkup/2009/08/the_seven_secrets_of_highly_ob.html

-------------------------------------

The Seven Secrets of Highly Obese People

Why do some people simply pack on the pounds effortlessly? It's not always genetics and it's not always gluttony and you can't always blame it on lack of exercise. Indeed, getting fat is often a result of some simple -- and easily correctable -- bad habits, especially when it comes to dining out.

As my co-author, Matt Goulding, and I began researching the Eat This, Not That! series, we discovered plenty of egregious examples of super-fattening foods in both America's supermarkets and our chain restaurants. And we learned that if you just know what to order and what to avoid, you can shave off pounds effortlessly. For example, does On the Border really need to stuff more than a day's worth of calories -- 2,550 -- into its Dos XX Fish Tacos? (Remember when fish was healthy?) And shouldn't Chili's warn parents when a selection on its kids' menu comes with 82 grams of fat, like its Pepper Pals Little Chicken Crispers does?

But it's not just the food itself. The restaurant industry has spent decades studying human behavior and figured out all sorts of subliminal ways to make us want to order and eat more. (Ever notice how all fast-food restaurants use red, yellow and orange in their packaging and decor, but never blue, green or purple? Think that's just a coincidence?) And a lot of those psychological tricks have become ingrained in our behavior. In a study in the journal Obesity, researchers looked at the habits of people dining at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Those with the highest body mass indexes (BMI) -- a measure of obesity -- seemed to demonstrate a series of "fat habits":

    * They use larger plates. When offered two plate sizes, 98.6 percent of those with the highest BMIs took the larger of the two plates to the buffet. A bigger plate tricks your eye into thinking you're not eating as much, and stuffing more food onto your plate -- and into your mouth. Use a smaller plate, get a smaller belly.
* They eat while looking at food. 41.7 percent of those with high BMIs took seats that overlooked the buffet, instead of sitting in a booth or facing in a different direction. The site of food tends to make our minds think we have more work to do, eating-wise. Keep your food stored in the fridge or the pantry, not out on the countertops.
* They eat with maximum efficiency. While Chinese buffets offer chopsticks, 91.3 percent of obese patrons opt for forks. That just makes it easier to shovel in the food!
* They clean their plates. Of those patrons who were heaviest, 94 percent cleaned their plates so there was nothing left. Ignore Mom's advice -- let a little linger.
* They chew faster. Researchers actually monitored the chewing habits of the buffet-goers and discovered that the heaviest 1/3 among them chewed their food an average of 11.9 times before swallowing. The middle 1/3 chewed an average of 14 times, and the leanest 1/3 chewed 14.8 times.
* They dive in. The leanest people in the study typically took a lap around the buffet first, to plot out what they wanted to eat. But the more overweight group charged right in; doing so means you may fill up on some less-appealing items, then have to go back to snag that one nosh you have to have, but missed the first time.

Oh, and one more habit the overweight have that we've been reporting on for years:

They skip breakfast. Doing so raises your risk of obesity by a whopping 450 percent!

They have an app for iPhone or iPod Touch users to track your calories and exercise, But best yet, on the website you can join challenges.
They have stuff like 'everyone wins' challenges you do at your own time (ie completing 100km cycleing total) and its all added up off your normal entries that you enter every day so you only need to track your usual exercise etc. They also have challenges with prizes, and you can start your own etc.
I joined one to loose more body fat than the owner otherwise he gives a $50 iTunes voucher <img src="http://weight-loss.co.nz/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />
I also joined a cycling and running one. Plus i got the iPhone app so i can log things on the go and not just in the website.
Oh and they have Motivators also, so you can hook up with somebody who has similar goals or stuff to motivate you <img src="http://weight-loss.co.nz/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

The yoghurt makers are gonna hate me for this...but here is my recipe to make fresh yoghurt from scratch - forget the sachets at $2 -3 each. Try this...

OK you need an Easy Yo maker or similar.

Half fill easy yo container with water. Add 2-3 tsp of any yoghurt you have on hand. This is the "starter". Add one cup of TRIM milk powder. Mix thoroughly. Add water to the top of the container, put lid on and place in boiling water to the baffle line in the easy yo maker as per usual. Allow to set as usual (about six hours)

Makes a litre of unsweetened yoghurt which is how we love it, or you have sweet tooths add 2-3 tsp of sugar during the making process. Slowly reduce the sugar over time, they'll get used to it!

Reserve 2-3 tsp of your yoghurt at the bottom of the container for the next batch. Swish water around to get it out and pour into the fresh clean container for next batch. Dont use the container again without washing thoroughly. Yoghurt needs to be made in pristinely clean containers.

Have plain, or add fruit, or in emergency, a tsp of jam for flavour.

You dont need the sachets. You dont need to buy the sachets or bottles of fruity syrupy stuff, they're just full of sugar and calories! Most kids will liek plain yoghurt with kiwifruit scooped in, or bananas, pineapple, stewed apple or rhubarb - YUM

I make a litre a day, a family of 4, we all have a cup each a day. It's very good for you.

You get trim milk powder at the supermarket. I buy it in the Pams 10 litre bags for about $9. Makes about 6.5 litres of yoghurt. Cost per litre about $1.50. Now that's cheaper! And it's fresh and therefore brimming with all that beneficial bacteria in yoghurt. Enjoy!

I saw it. I thought the nutrition segment was quite good. Like the bit about museli bars. Didn't like the panty sniffer though! <img src="http://weight-loss.co.nz/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_eek.gif" title="8O" class="bb_smilies" />

They had an article about clothing sizes all being different. Apparently Australia is thinking of moving with sizing based on measurements rather than size numbers.
They cited Ezibuy website as one of the best which had consistant sizes, i went there and according to most of their sizes im a friggen 16?!
Then they totally don't have the same sizes for each brand so you need to check each brand against the size which got confusing soon after and I gave up.
Oh for the record im usually a size 12, 14 if its an odd fit, and occasionally (rarely) a 10 (go the dodgy warehouse jeans!)
