Homemade Yoghurt recipe

    The yoghurt makers are gonna hate me for this...but here is my recipe to make fresh yoghurt from scratch - forget the sachets at $2 -3 each. Try this...

    OK you need an Easy Yo maker or similar.

    Half fill easy yo container with water. Add 2-3 tsp of any yoghurt you have on hand. This is the "starter". Add one cup of TRIM milk powder. Mix thoroughly. Add water to the top of the container, put lid on and place in boiling water to the baffle line in the easy yo maker as per usual. Allow to set as usual (about six hours)

    Makes a litre of unsweetened yoghurt which is how we love it, or you have sweet tooths add 2-3 tsp of sugar during the making process. Slowly reduce the sugar over time, they'll get used to it!

    Reserve 2-3 tsp of your yoghurt at the bottom of the container for the next batch. Swish water around to get it out and pour into the fresh clean container for next batch. Dont use the container again without washing thoroughly. Yoghurt needs to be made in pristinely clean containers.

    Have plain, or add fruit, or in emergency, a tsp of jam for flavour.

    You dont need the sachets. You dont need to buy the sachets or bottles of fruity syrupy stuff, they're just full of sugar and calories! Most kids will liek plain yoghurt with kiwifruit scooped in, or bananas, pineapple, stewed apple or rhubarb - YUM

    I make a litre a day, a family of 4, we all have a cup each a day. It's very good for you.

    You get trim milk powder at the supermarket. I buy it in the Pams 10 litre bags for about $9. Makes about 6.5 litres of yoghurt. Cost per litre about $1.50. Now that's cheaper! And it's fresh and therefore brimming with all that beneficial bacteria in yoghurt. Enjoy!

    Oh we used to do it slightly different when i was growing up

    go 50/50 boiled milk and cold milk (ie 500ml boiled milk mixed with 500ml cold), then a couple tablespoons of natural unsweetened yogurt, mix it up and it it on the hot water cylinder for a day or three or some place warm. A yogert maker would do.

    In fact technically you can just put milk into the easy yo pot with a couple tablespoons of natural unsweetened yogurt (for the culture) and proceed as normal. The packets are for flavour.
    However I think $2-3 for the packets is a great deal anyway, so I'm happy to fork out, its about the same cost as doing milk+culture way etc
